Your Complete Guide to Arabic Fragrances
Whether you are new to Arabic perfumery or a lifelong lover
of oud, this guide will help you find your perfect scent.
What Makes Arabic Perfumery Unique?
Arabic fragrance has a history stretching back thousands of
years. Where Western perfumery often favours light, fleeting
scents, Arabic perfumery embraces depth, richness, and
longevity. A good Arabic fragrance does not just sit on the
surface — it sinks into your skin, evolves over hours, and
leaves a trail that people remember.
The key difference is concentration and ingredients. Arabic
perfumes are typically higher in concentration — Eau de Parfum
and Extrait de Parfum — meaning they last significantly longer
than their Western counterparts.
The Four Pillars of Arabic Fragrance
Oud
Oud is the heart of Arabic perfumery. Derived from the resin
of infected agarwood trees, genuine oud is one of the most
expensive raw materials in the world. It smells dark, woody,
animalic, and deeply complex. No two ouds smell identical —
Hindi oud is earthy and smoky, while Cambodian oud is sweeter
and cleaner.
Amber
Amber in Arabic perfumery is a warm, resinous accord — sweet,
powdery, and enveloping. It forms the base of many classic
Arabic blends and gives fragrances their signature warmth and
longevity.
Musk
Arabic musk is richer and more sensual than Western musk.
It sits close to the skin and gives fragrances a clean yet
deeply personal character. Many Arabic perfumes use musk as
a base to make the fragrance feel like a second skin.
Rose
The rose used in Arabic perfumery — particularly Taif rose
from Saudi Arabia — is unlike any other rose in the world.
It is deeper, richer, and more complex than Bulgarian or
Turkish rose. Combined with oud or musk it becomes something
truly extraordinary.
Understanding Fragrance Notes
Every fragrance has three layers:
Top notes — what you smell in the first 5–15 minutes.
Usually fresh, citrus, or spice.
Heart notes — the soul of the fragrance. Emerges after
15–30 minutes and lasts for hours. This is where oud,
rose, and amber live.
Base notes — the foundation. Appears after an hour and
can last all day. Musk, sandalwood, and ambergris live here.
When testing a fragrance, always wait at least 30 minutes
before deciding. The top notes are just the introduction.
EDP vs Extrait — Which Is Right for You?
Eau de Parfum (EDP) — 15–20% concentration. Lasts 6–10
hours. Perfect for daily wear and warmer climates.
Extrait de Parfum — 25–40% concentration. Lasts 12+ hours.
A single application in the morning can last all day.
Ideal for special occasions or those who want maximum impact.
At Dubai Blends, most of our collection sits at EDP or
Extrait concentration — because we believe a fragrance
should stay with you.
How to Layer Arabic Fragrances
Layering is the art of combining two or more fragrances
to create your own unique scent. It is common practice
in Arabic perfume culture.
Start with a base — apply a musk or amber fragrance first.
Add your signature — layer an oud or rose fragrance on top.
Let them dry — give each layer 2–3 minutes before applying
the next.
A simple starting combination: a soft musk as your base,
topped with an oud rose. The result is something no one
else in the room will be wearing.
How to Make Your Fragrance Last Longer
Apply to pulse points — wrists, neck, behind the ears,
inner elbows. These areas generate heat which amplifies
the scent.
Moisturise first — fragrance lasts longer on hydrated skin.
Apply an unscented lotion before your perfume.
Do not rub — rubbing your wrists together breaks down the
fragrance molecules and shortens longevity.
Store correctly — keep your bottles away from direct
sunlight and heat. A cool dark drawer is ideal.
