Description

A full 70ml bottle of the fragrance that inspired this one — Maison Francis Kurkdjian's Baccarat Rouge 540 — retails for around $490 AUD in Australia through MECCA, the brand's exclusive local stockist, and the Extrait concentration commands an even steeper price when you can find it. Barakkat Rouge 540 Extrait de Parfum by Joyous gives you that same saffron-jasmine-amberwood signature in a richer, more concentrated form and a full 100ml bottle, at a fraction of the cost.

The Story
Baccarat Rouge 540 was created by perfumer Francis Kurkdjian in 2015 to mark the 250th anniversary of Baccarat, the French crystal house, with the name referencing the 540°C temperature at which molten crystal glows scarlet. The Extrait version later followed as a more intense, longer-lasting take on the same idea — same DNA, turned up. Joyous, part of the wave of UAE-based fragrance houses producing note-accurate interpretations of celebrated niche releases, built this Extrait around that richer concentration, making the profile both more accessible and, in extrait form, more long-wearing than the standard EDP.

The Scent
It opens with saffron and jasmine, but in extrait concentration the saffron reads a touch deeper and less sharp than in the eau de parfum — spiced and slightly leathery, with the jasmine keeping it from tipping too heavy too early.

Through the heart, amberwood, ambergris and hedione take the composition into its signature warm, radiant territory. The higher oil concentration of an extrait means these notes feel denser and closer to the skin rather than dispersing as quickly, so the "clean skin" diffusion effect associated with hedione comes through as a slower, richer bloom.

The base of ambroxan, cedarwood, oakmoss, fir gum and sugar is where extrait concentration really shows its value — this is what gives the fragrance its long dry-down. The sugar softens the woody-amber structure into something warm and inviting rather than sharp, and in extrait form that dry-down simply lasts longer on skin.

An Honest Note on Performance and Opening
Extrait concentrations generally carry less of the sharp alcohol bite you get with an EDP, since there's a higher ratio of fragrance oil to alcohol — but give it the first 10 minutes to settle regardless, as the saffron and amberwood are still finding their balance in that window. The trade-off with any richer, oil-heavy extrait is that it can sit a little closer to the skin than an EDP once it's fully settled, rather than throwing sillage across a room — so if big projection late into the wear is your priority, that's worth knowing upfront. What you gain instead is genuine staying power.

Performance

  • Longevity: Strong, typically outlasting the standard EDP concentration thanks to the higher oil ratio
  • Projection: Moderate and close-to-skin once settled, with a richer initial bloom
  • Sillage: Noticeable indoors; more intimate outdoors than a heavier-sillage EDP
  • Best Season: Autumn and winter, and any occasion calling for a fragrance that lasts the full evening
  • Caveat: Allow the first 10 minutes for the top notes to settle; don't expect EDP-level room-filling sillage from this concentration

Comparison to the Inspiration Fragrance

  • Built around the same saffron, jasmine, amberwood, ambergris and ambroxan pyramid the original Extrait is known for
  • Comes in a generous 100ml bottle, well over the standard 70ml size most extrait releases offer
  • A fraction of the cost of the original Extrait, which commands a premium over even the already expensive EDP
  • Shares the same warm, sugary-amber signature with the richer, longer-lasting profile extrait concentration is known for

About the Brand

FAQ

What does Barakkat Rouge 540 Extrait by Joyous smell like?
It opens with saffron and jasmine, moves into a warm amberwood and ambergris heart, and settles into a rich, sweet ambroxan and cedarwood base — the same profile as the EDP, but denser and longer-lasting.

How does it compare to the fragrance it's inspired by, and how does it differ from the EDP?
It's built around the same note pyramid as the original Extrait, in a full 100ml bottle, at a fraction of the price of an original Extrait that already sits above the roughly $490 AUD 70ml EDP price point at MECCA. Compared to our own EDP version, this Extrait trades some initial room-filling sillage for noticeably longer staying power.

Is it a men's or women's fragrance?
It's unisex. The saffron-jasmine opening keeps it balanced, and the ambroxan-woody base wears equally well on men and women.

How long does it last?
Expect strong longevity thanks to the higher oil concentration, with the sugary-amber base carrying well into the evening. Projection sits closer to the skin than the EDP once it settles.

What's the best season or occasion to wear it?
Autumn and winter, and any evening or special occasion where you want a fragrance that lasts without needing to reapply.

Does Dubai Blends ship this Australia-wide?
Yes — fast and tracked to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra and everywhere in between. If you like this one, check out our Khamrah by Lattafa and Exotic by Ahmed Al Maghribi for more warm, oriental options.

Pro Tip
If you've already tried the EDP, don't expect identical throw from this Extrait — it's built for longevity over projection. Apply it to pulse points and let it settle for 10 minutes before judging the full effect, and consider one extra spray on clothing if you want a touch more presence through the evening.
